General Dentistry Procedures

At DiLoreto Dental Care we offer an extensive variety of general dentistry procedures at our Detroit-area practice. The following are just a few of the general dentistry procedures we are proud to offer:

  • Laser Treatment – A fairly quick procedure to speed up the healing process of apthous ulcers, better known as canker sores. The treatment also shortens the duration of cold sores.
  • Periodontal Check – Conducted during every routine dental exam, the checkup looks for periodontal disease and allows us to determine the depth of tissue attachment around the tooth. If the tissue pocket is too deep, the patient will not be able to maintain proper oral hygiene, and further treatment will be required.
  • Intra-Oral Camera – Allows the patient to see what the hygienist and doctor see during cleanings and exams. It shows the patient the inside of their mouth, as well as teeth that are not visible with a mirror. The camera is used as a tool to detect a variety of issues, including oral cancer. Oral cancer is a very serious disease, and it is very important to catch early on. Through our examinations we will be able to identify oral cancer at the onset, which can greatly improve the chances of a successful treatment.

Pediatric General Dentistry

If your child does not properly clean their teeth, bacteria may start to grow and break down the enamel. While a tooth develops, deep grooves form in the biting surface on the back teeth. The groves are called “fissures” and the intersection of fissures is called a “pit”; these areas are at the highest risk of cavities, even with excellent care and routine oral hygiene. Tooth sealants protect these high risk areas by sealing out plaque and food.

Sealants are made of a resin material that is applied to the pits and fissures of the back teeth. Since children are more susceptible to tooth decay than adults, tooth sealants should be applied, when possible, before decay begins. The enamel of the teeth wears down over the years, even with good oral hygiene. A fluoride treatment will strengthen the enamel and fortify the teeth with a germ fighting solution, as well as help reduce sensitivity in the teeth.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. This joint connects the lower jaw to the base of the skull. TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint disorder) usually presents itself with severe pain in the jaw and other areas of the face. There are numerous causes for TMJ disorder, including dental problems, alignment complications, injury, arthritis, and tooth grinding. TMJ disorder is characterized by pain in the jaw, locked jaw, headaches, clicking and popping in the ear, and an uncomfortable bite. The source of TMJ pain is believed to be displaced cartilage.

Treatment options for TMJ are as varied as the causes and symptoms. If teeth grinding is the result of the TMJ disorder, or possibly a few other jaw related conditions, Dr. DiLoreto may prescribe a night guard. For more severe cases of TMJ disorder, medication may be prescribed. If you think you may be suffering from TMJ disorder, Dr. DiLoreto and our staff, providing general dentistry care to the Detroit area, may be able to help. During your personal consultation we will evaluate your case and provide information and possible solutions to help you resolve the issues that are causing your pain.
